Chicago report
It has been a while since I last wrote about one of my weekend trips to see Michelle in Chicago. This one was short, but fun.
Friday night the Mosaic played at the Portal Music Café here in Madison, so I took the 10 a.m. bus on Saturday and met Michelle downtown at about 2. A few highlights:
Saturday night, we had tapas and sangria at Café Ba-Ba-Reeba, which is just great. The wait is routinely only a third of what they say it will be, and the food is amazing. We had serrano ham on tomato bread, tenderloin with bleu cheese, stuffed mushrooms and goat cheese in tomato sauce (with bread, of course).
Later, we saw The Incredibles at a theater downtown. I had high expectations for this Pixar collaboration with Brad Bird (who created Iron Giant and consulted on The Simpsons and King of the Hill), but this film blew me away. It touched every emotion, featured Pixar’s trademark cleverness and was pretty nice to look at as well.
We were surprised to see a long line (all adults) for the 10:45 show, but now I know that The Incredibles had a record opening weekend as the best Disney opener of all time. The previous record holder was Pixar’s last film, Finding Nemo. I bet Disney is sorry to see them go…
On Sunday, we visited the Chicago SOFA Show at Navy Pier. I was hoping for a display of couches, but it was actually an art show — SOFA stands for sculpture, objects and functional art. Most of the displays catered to the mega-rich-art-connoisseur crowd, but I was taken by the wood working (an $8000 desk caught my fancy) and some of the glass work. Seeing as I know nothing about art, I will limit my analysis to saying that it was “cool.”
This week I have two tests, two articles due, and assorted ZEMU projects to continue… Wish me luck!
